Welcome to the forum, Celina.

If you have never done yoga before, my advice is to find a yoga studio that teaches Hatha yoga for beginners. You can call or email those yoga studios listed on the website and find one that suits fits your schedule.

Yoga studios are better for beginners because the classes are usually smaller, compared to yoga centres or fitness/health clubs ones. So you can receive more attention from the teachers.

Location wise, try to find one that is either near your work place or convenient to go after work and on your way home. Try to attend at least 2-3 classes per week.

Good luck and have fun.

Namaste.

Hi Celina,

Don't worry too much. Yoga is fun. I'm sure you'll love it.

For beginner, I agreed with Namaste that you should go for studios instead of yoga centres.

If you have time, go down personally to check out those studios nearby where you live or your work place. Some studios offer trial class or even free. Try it out !!

Most importantly, you should feel comfortable with the yoga instructor's teaching. Talk to the instructor and ask questions.

Lastly, don't forget to check the class schedule & package whether can fit into your budget and your schedule.

Hope to see you around.

Hi Lee-Ann,

It's good to hear that you are keen to pick up yoga again...

Unless you had a good foundation and you're comfortable with big classes, I suggest that you go for YOGA STUDIOS. It's alot cheaper than yoga centres too.

Since you have stopped yoga for awhile, it's better for the teacher to help to adjust your posture into correct alignment again.

While practising with a smaller group of students will not stress you out and you get more personal attention from the teacher.

Most of the teachers in yoga studios make an effort to remember his/her students names and the teachers know their students physical level very well. This will help to minimise the injuries while practising yoga.

There are a few good studios listed in this web. Most of them charge at $170-$220 for 10 lessons.

Hope you are able to find the suitable studio soon !

Hi lee-ann,

i took on Yoga about 7 & a half months ago. The first studio that i've signed up with, 'cos my work place is very nearby, so i went for classes 'bout 3 to 4 times per week. So, i decided to sign up for the unlimited package which is $110 per month. But sadly, the studio has closed (It closed in end April), which means i have to try out other studios in order to find one which i'm comfortable with.
Initially, when i found out the kind of prices which some studios offered for the unlimited package, i was afraid that i couldn't afford it, what with my commitments and stuff. But when i went for a single drop-in class at some of the studios, i discover that the instructors are very professional and very good! And the students there... Wow, I was very amazed with what some of the students has achieved when they kept going for classes at the same studio/with the same instructor. And naturally, this led to the discovery that i still have a very very long way to go!
So... what i feel is that dont think about the costs first. Just go for the single drop-in class, look around the place, go for the lesson and see whether you're comfortable with the instructor or not. And dont worry, usually, they dont pressurise you to sign up for a package when you finish the drop-in class. But if you do have queries about the lesson, you can just ask the instructor. I'm sure they will be happy to clarify for you.
I hope my reply provide some enlightenment for you? hee ...

P.S. i went for yoga in the first place was to cure my back problems.

Hello lee-ann,

I agreed with Zane. Don't worry about the cost, try out different places 1st. Try out the classes and see if you like any of the yoga instructor's teaching style.

If you have done yoga before, it shouldn't be a problem for you to join back again. Just keep practising will help you to come back to your previous level or even better...

Curious, what style of yoga did you practise previously? Hatha or Ashtanga? Maybe you should try a different style for this time?

If you found any interesting yoga studios, please share your experience with us.

Take care. See you around.

Grayce,

Thanks for your reply.

I am also considering Ashtanga Yoga Singapore. Do you know how big is the class and who is the instructor? Thanks.

namaste.

i've been goin Ashtanga Yoga Singapore for about 2 months, for mysore in the mornings. i think there's about 10 students in the morning mysore class. The instructor is Stanley, and he's a great guy, and loves to share his knowledge with his students.
Does that answer your query?

Zane,

Thanks for your reply.

Actually, I am looking for a studio with a small class size so that the teacher is able to correct our posture for beginner like me.

But it seems that AYS provide beginner course does that mean that there is no trial class and we have to complete the whole course?

p/s: The yoga centre is also very attractive as they offer many kinds of yoga under one roof

Zane

namaste.

you are totally new to yoga?

you can always try his led class in the evenings, and see how it goes, whether you are comfortable with stanley. i went to his led class once, and at that time, the class size was about 7 students, but am not sure 'bout now.

you can always send an e-mail to AYS 'bout your queires.

good luck...

Zane ~ Need your advice on ashatanga yoga.

My friends mentioned that for a beginner who is still new to yoga it is not adviseable to take up ashatanga yoga immediately.

I have been practicing hatha yoga for 1.5 months. Do you think I should practice more on hatha before moving on to ashtanga? Thanks in advance.

Zane

Hi,

Yes, i would think its better that you practise on hatha yoga for several more months before you go for ashtanga. I myself practise hatha for about 7 to 8 months before my friend asked me to try ashtanga led, and its only 2 months ago, that i decided to go mysore (i've been practising yoga for about 1 year & 1 month).

But, i would still hope you would drop an e-mail to stanley and explain to him about your situation so that he can advise you whats the next step to take. He IS the certified ashtanga instructor after all.

Namaste.

Hi all! I'm Jiamin from Hwa Chong Institution. My friend and I are thinking of setting up a new CCA "Yoga Club" in school. We would like to ask if it is possible to get an instructor for a class of about 20 – 30 students? Of course, as we are still students, we hope that the cost will not be too high. If anyone has any idea where we can find an affordable and good instructor, please tell us!! THANKS LOTS!! XD

Hi people,

May I know any good yoga centre / studio near harbour front area (near my work place), so that i can go straight after work. Or near my house (serangoon central). Of course, the course fee must be affordable by me.

Hi there

Good to read all the feeback. Wondering if any of u experts can help. I am trying to find a very laid back yoga school. I have been to all the centres Pure Yoga True Yoga, and dont really like it. Oops. Too big, non personal and a little OTT for me. Wondering if anyone can recommend a small class prefebly early early mornings like 7 am or on weekends and outdoors if possible. I want to do it to help my back and to relax la! So looking for a very chill out class and group with no stress no competition no posers and lots of love!
